We love bacon! Labeled as hungry obsessed pork lovers we are not afraid to give a big squeal of approval. You see bacon is not just for breakfast anymore. We have seen it all Baconnaise, Bacon salt, Bacon vodka, bacon maple doughnuts, gummi bacon, bacon-flavored lip balm, chocolate-covered bacon and bacon tattoos. Now the love affair and saga continues with Bacon Marmalade. It’s crispy, smokey, tantalizing, sizzling bacon taste with every bite will make even the most hardcore vegetarian weak at the knees.

“Sugar Ah, honey, honey….you are my candy gals and you got me wanting you!”

We had the pleasure of going behind the scenes at our favorite neighborhood toffee sweet shop for a sneak peek in the GoodyTwos Toffee kitchen. Our goody mission was to film the first of many short food documentaries for our exciting & mouthwatering “Behind the Food” series. Not only do we want to capture the love, joy and passion of these gifted local foodcrafter’s but tell the story behind their food. Because everyone has a story that is waiting to be told & shared with the world. Besides good food should be shared! We are passionate about answering the age old question “What drives you?” and “Why do you love what you do?” We hope you enjoy the video series as much as we loved capturing it on film! After shining the spotlight and camera’s on these local food artisans our desire is that you will come to connect with them in a personal way, as part of your family, and gain a higher respect for their craft. As well as be more wholeheartedly eager to support and spread the word about their delicious endeavors. Because like we always say “Life is to short to eat bad food!”

Meet Donna Gabrilson and Stacey Barnes, the adorable mother & daughter toffee duo of Goodytwos Toffee Company located in Scottsdale, AZ. Their mission is to spread toffee sweetness around the world one crunchy bite at a time. We got a candid snapshot of the Goodytwos gals in action as they measured, poured, stirred and told us about the passion behind their sweet, crunchy and goodylicious toffee made with love. This down to earth, doubly inspired toffee duo did not disappointment. We had the lucky fortune of whipping up & tasting a batch of their famous toffee, truly a labor of love for this pair of a kind. It all started with Traditional Toffee (reminiscent of childhood memories) from their great great grandmothers secret rich buttery recipe passed down from generation to generation.

Being toffee maker extraordinaire’s they make handmade artisan, preservative & gluten free toffee in small batches with tender lovin’ care. Of course using only the best all natural ingredients from pure cane sugar, french sea salt, local Arizonian creamery butter and Belgium chocolate. We could definitely taste the love! Not only is this sweet shop charming and their toffee & peanut brittle to die for, the GoodyTwos gals are just as sweet & warm as the toffee & delicious confections they make fresh daily. Their beautiful smiles are infectious! Did we mention that they sampled over 16,000 lbs of toffee last year to maintain quality control and not compromise on the goodness. Now that’s dedication!

So, what makes this toffee twosome’s candy confections so sinfully sweet, delicious and amazing? The toffee is doubly inspired and doubly delicious with 10 mouthwatering flavors that joyfully blend the nostalgia of traditional and cozy (Donna) with a corky nutty twist (Stacy) of fun. Each batch is steeped in family tradition (great grandma’s secret recipe) w/ a twist on the sugary wild side. You can try their traditional toffee or have your taste buds go on a sweet adventure. Case in point their Nutty Twist made with tequila & lime or their Salty and Sweet which are some of our favorites. Remember “A balanced diet is a piece of toffee in both hands”. So don’t forget to visit the GoodyTwo’s gals at their sweet shop or at local farmers markets to sample a nibble or two . If you don’t live in our neck of the woods you can always shop online.

We want to send out a sweet thank you to Donna & Stacy for making life a bit sweeter for all of us. Twoodles!

Virtually every small town, city, village or burg has its own slice of heaven, a favorite local pizzeria, mom & pop pizza joint, major chain or street vendor to grab a slice or share a pie. Whether you are dining in, carrying out or having it delivered it’s astonishing how much Americans love the taste of pizza, bordering on obsessive and psychotic (guilty as charge!). The obsession for a good slice is justified when you are on the quest for the best pizza and left to deal with crushing disappointments. Case in point, pizza where you couldn’t taste the difference between the crust and the cardboard box. We have had the unfortunate luck of dining at pizzeria’s where the pizza was greasy, dough was lifeless and the ingredients were something to be desired. Pizza connoisseurs bicker endlessly about where to find the best pies. While cities across America compete for the covenant bragging rights of best pizza. So, who will be The Godfather of pizza? Let the pizza wars continue!

We would all agree that making a good pizza is an art form and can be hard to find. Over the years after tasting a few horrible slices (trial & error) we began to ponder a profound question “What is the secret to great pizza?”. Hmmm…Is it the sauce? Could it be the crust? Is it the ooey gooey cheese? Perhaps it’s the wood-fired oven, done the old fashion way? Well, for us its all of the above. Nothing beats biting into a piping hot pizza w/ crispy crust, stringy mozzarella and savory & zesty vine ripened tomato sauce garnished with fresh herbs. With the crust being at center stage and the fresh ingredients playing a supporting Oscar winning role (Bravo!). On the prowl for good or shall we say extraordinary pizza (yes, it’s a tough job but someone has to do) got us reacquainted with old favorites such as the classic Margherita and introduced us to creative avant garde artisan pies (think outside the pie crust) .

Being a hungry couple on the mission for good eats we always love getting dining suggestions from family, friends, avid foodie and blog readers (thanks for tuning in yal!). Thanks to a long time Arizona resident we were introduced to La Grande Orange Grocery Cafe and Pizzeria, a neighborhood gem, once discovered made us feel like we won the jackpot. But the question still remained…besides the crust would La Grande Orange oven baked pizza rise to the occasion when it comes to flavors? As we hungrily ponder this question we decided to let our taste buds do all the judging!

Located in Arcadia, a neighborhood known for good eats and amazing restaurants La Grande Orange (LGO) is making a big splash. Arizonians flock here to feast on mouthwatering sandwiches, pizzas, salads, decadent breads, pastries and a good cup of joe. La Grande Orange is a gourmet boutique grocery and cafe with an adjacent casual, family friendly pizzeria . Rise and Shine! The cafe is the perfect spot to relax with cup of coffee and newspaper in hand over a scintillating breakfast. The morning is not complete without munching on a their famous Commuter Sandwich, scrambled eggs, tomato and mayo on english muffin w/ choice of bacon, ham, turkey, smoked salmon or avocado. What make LGO one of a kind is their savory, over sized, toasted and crunchy English Muffin’s. Their English Muffin’s are formed by hand with organic flour using an age old recipe and griddled fresh daily.

At their boutique style grocery and cafe you can step up to the counter and purchase local artisan pastries (Tammie Coe Cakes), sweet confections ( Goodytwo’s Toffee ), coffee drinks, novelty items, wine, sandwiches, sushi, grab and go salads or their famous Green Chili Burger on a LGO English Muffin (man getting hungry just thinking about it!). Their grocery/ cafe menu is perfect for take out, ideal for picnics, or a bite to eat on the way to work or at lunch. They even have curbside service. You can even peruse their wooden store grocery shelves and purchase toiletries, flowers, pasta, cookbooks and more!

What makes this restaurant such a fun trendy dining spot is the history behind the name. La Grande Orange was born in a vast sea of sweet orange groves in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona. In the 30s, Arizona’s young and spirited would park their cars in a large circle with their headlights blazing and dance to the tunes of Benny Goodman and Count Basie. Inspired by that memory, Executive Chef/Owner, Bob Lynn pays tribute in his restaurants to the good old days.

La Grande Orange has been packing in the crowd since its doors opened so finding a parking park could be challenge. But trust us it is worth the wait and headache that comes with parking just to bite into a slice of their delicious oven brick pizza . Their pizza is a serious contender for some of the best pizza we have had the honor of devouring and swallowing in minutes ( now that we think of it, we didn’t even bothered to chew). When you first arrive you immediately feel at ease when you see a brightly colored outdoor mural that whimsically features an orange and lemon puckering up, serving as the back drop for fun outdoor dining complete with bistro tables. The restaurant’s lively bistro atmosphere is very casual and you immediately feel right at home when you are greeted by the kind waitstaff and upbeat relaxed music. The soothing, attractive and hip ambiance provided the perfect atmosphere to swoon over pizza and fall in love with their salads and appetizers (baked chicken wings rule!) Their is a beautiful floral centerpiece display on the center service table which is stocked with piles of pizza trays, pitchers and silverware. Psychedelic 60′s artsy music posters of The Doors Jim Morrison grace the walls of La Grande Orange to give it a hip, relaxed and not so serious vibe.

The beautiful decor combined with candle light makes for a romantic mood. So husbands & boyfriends listen up this is the perfect date night spot. We got a comfortable window seat for two as we pondered over menu showcasing American comfort food classics with a modern twist. The menu holds true to the culinary motto “keep it simple” with upscale taste, down to earth menu offerings and wallet friendly prices. Gracing the menu you will find fabulous salads, hamburgers, exotic combination pizzas, and baked chicken wings. Being indecisive our server was kind enough to help us narrow down our choices. She told us that the Roasted Corn Pizza topped with laura chenel goat cheese, corn, roasted tomatoes and basil was exquisite and would make our taste buds sing. Also that the Gladiator Pizza loaded with Schreiner’s spicy Italian sausage, pepperoni, premium cheese and red sauce is a gourmet pizza must, popular choice among the happy dining crowd. Hmmm… so many choices so little stomach room. Great news! For those of you who can’t tolerate wheat-based bread, pastas, breadings and pizza crusts you don’t have to sit drooling on the sidelines while your friends chow down on a slice. La Grande Orange not only offers vegan options, but has a gluten free and friendly menu. Tiny leaflet symbols on the menu serve as your dining road map to what is gluten free and vegetarian. Man they have thought of everything!

Here at La Grande Orange Pizzeria pizza making has been elevated to an art form. While we pondered over such a life changing and important decision we started with their special as an appetizer a Smoke Salmon Pizza (smoked salmon, capers, parsley, creme fraiche and lemon zest). After just one nibble we thought we died and had gone to heaven. In the end we decided to save the Roasted Corn for another pizza extravaganza and opted to go half and half. One side Avocado Pizza and the other side Gladiator (a meat lovers dream) topped with premium, honest and fresh ingredients. The Avocado Pizza topped with avocado, tomatoes, basil and lemon zest (you can add prosciutto for extra $$) is a vegetarian favorite. The server then asked if we wanted freshly grated Parmesan and the answer was a big “yes” please. Now came the first bite and real taste test… the crust. La Grande Orange pizza proves that when you have stellar ingredients, one need do very little to make them shine. Just from biting into our first bite you can tell the ingredients are first class and the flavors were balanced. Of course the sourdough crust being the star of the show adding an element of tartness. The crust is attractively charred (slightly), chewy, crispy to perfection, just the way we like it. It provides the perfect canvas for sweet red tomato sauce, cheese, herbs and their vast array of fresh toppings. It amazing what masterfully can come from the inferno-like depths of a pizza oven. We are definitely smitten with La Grande Orange delicious & savory pies!

Hey, but don’t forget to save room for dessert! The son of La Grande Orange owner/chef Lynn is following in his dad’s culinary footsteps by opening up a gelateria right next door. Indulge your sweet tooth by venturing next door to The Grateful Spoon Gelato formerly Arlecchino Gelateria (do you sense a rock & roll theme) for a scoop or two of their uber-popular artisanal gelato. The gelato is made from scratch with premium, local and all natural ingredients, only the best. You may even be tempted to have dessert first then dinner. La Grande Orange Grocery/Cafe & Pizzeria is definitely one of our favorite cafe and pizza hangouts! Hope to see you there!!

We love embracing a sustainable, organic & locavore lifestyle! Our Saturday mornings are always spent roaming around the Scottsdale Old Town Farmers Market in search of local eats and fresh produce. So you can imagine our heartache to hear that the Scottsdale Old Town Farmers Market season is coming to a close at the end of May. We are already going through tearful withdrawal at the thought of waiting until fall. For us the highlight of going to the Farmer’s Market is the feeling of community, a home away from home. Listening to live music and meeting with local growers, mom and pop stands and some of our favorite artisan’s & specialty vendors face to face is always a joy ( no middleman here!).

When we arrive at the Farmers Market we immediately walk around and explore & converse with the various vendors before filling our BYOB. The farmers are eager to show off their harvest. As we peruse the produce tables our minds begins to race a thousand miles per hour. What to buy? What to cook? and importantly How to cook it? Lucky for us we had the opportunity to attend, sit in and taste a few dishes at Scottsdale Old Town Farmer’s Market Farm Session. We were thrilled to hear that local chefs would be putting on their chef hats and preparing a signature dish with some of our favorite farm fresh local ingredients during a Farm Session cooking demo. The Farm Session is a unique “farm to table” outdoor experience where renowned local chefs lead a seasonal cooking class with local ingredients and help average cooks like us in the kitchen. The Farm Sessions are a great way to get inspired by the bountiful array of vibrant seasonal produce and specialty foods available locally.

What is exciting about each Farm Session is that the chef’s begin their culinary session with a farmer’s market shopping excursion for ingredients . There is one catch…in order to pay tribute to Arizona’s wonderful diverse set of farmers, ranchers and food purveyors participating chefs can ONLY use locally sourced ingredients from the farmers market or Arizona. It is not hard to get inspired being surrounded by the Farmers markets tastiest, freshest, and intoxicating aroma of fruits, herbs and vegetables lovingly grown by farmers who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. We have been tempted many times to nibble on a carrot or bite into a juicy tomato on the spot (some restraint was needed!). Cheese, homemade pasta’s, pastries, artisan ice cream and fresh baked bread beg to be devoured (we can’t help ourselves). No avid foodie or hungry passerbyer’s can resist the smell of good things pulled from the earth or out of the oven. Not to mention the opportunity to support passionate local farmers & food artisans.

We had the opportunity to be spectators and taste testers at our first Farm session. Of course our hungry bellies could not resist! We got to witness culinary genius Aaron May (owner of Over Easy, 18 Degrees, The Lodge, Mabel’s on Main and famous Sol y Sombra) turn up the heat in the kitchen. While he chopped, diced, stirred & sauteed he spilled the beans about his upcoming restaurant Iruna, a Spanish kitchen and lounge. The restaurants menu will reflect the culture and cuisine of Northern Spain and the Pyrenees mountains. Iruna which is named after the Basque word for the Spanish city of Pamplona will open sometime in May in the Pischke’s space in Old Town Scottsdale.

Iruna will be Chef May’s second stab at Spanish cuisine since closing Sol y Sombra – his DC Ranch Spanish eatery. Iruna’s seasonal menu will showcase Spanish flavors, ingredients and local produce. Although the menu is hush hush he did say that it will consist of smaller plates and tapas. If you are the adventurous type razor clams, turbot, octopus and sea urchin will grace the menu. Diners will also get to taste dairy ingredients popular in the Basque region of northeastern Spain. The menu will be pared with an extensive Old World wine and well crafted cocktail list that will transport diners overseas. Iruna will have a casual dining atmosphere with industrial, handcrafted and contemporary flair. So, we can’t wait to make a reservation. The grand opening is still tentative but we will make sure to blog and tweet when the doors open. But until then we will just have to wait and ponder hungry thoughts of Spain!

Now with out further ado – on to the delicious photos and simple tasty dishes Chef May cooked up during The Farm Session using ingredients from the Farmer’s Market. All of these mouthwatering dishes inspired by locally grown produce from the market and locally sourced ingredients are some of his favorites that we have come to love. We have even included one of Chef May’s recipes from The Farm Session, a refreshing Shrimp and Jicama Fruit Salad which is perfect fool proof summer fare. Perfect for any occasion! We hope this dish will inspire you to get in the kitchen. Enjoy!

During the Farm Session – Chef Aaron May produced 3 improvisational dishes. See photos below.

2. Cut Jicama to manageable size pieces, slice thin. You can use a mandolin slicer to get the work done or practice your knife skills in the kitchen.

3. Toss thinly sliced Jicama in a bowl and set aside to serve as the base for rest of the dish.

4. Cut & slice 2 Jalapeno, cut off top then cut in 1/2 and discard seed bed which contains heat. Juliene the Jalapeno and add to bowl.

5. Zest grapefruit and orange and set aside for garnish. Then peel down the grapefruit and orange and slice to get nice pinwheels of citrus (make sure to remove pith which is bitter) and place in bowl.

6. Slice pear thin and add to bowl for a nice crunch. The pear adds sweetness to the grapefruit while the oranges add tartness.

7. Roll an orange to loosen section, then cut in half to squeeze juice on top of the fruit and jalapeno’s in the bowl. Make sure to catch the orange seeds. The orange juice creates a base for a dressing and brings together flavors of a composed dish. The citrus also prevents oxidation and browning of the fruit.

8. Add some black pepper and a pinch of salt.

9. Add 16-20lbs of deveined raw shrimp and leave on the tail (purchase fresh seafood at Rocky Point, Costco’s or Wholefoods) in another bowl. Pour cinnamon and Penzey’s Spices Smoked Paprika over the shrimp to add some spice.

10. Add enough cornstarch to coat the raw shrimp, this will help thicken the sauce.

11. Toss all the ingredients in the shrimp bowl together with some tender lovin’ care.

12. Cook shrimp for 8 minutes. Heat pan w/ canola oil, once hot add coated shrimp. Chef May’s Rule of Thumb: “Don’t overcrowd the pan”

13. Once shrimp is half cooked add star anise to the pan, it releases oil & licorice flavor.

14. Add Pillsbury Rose Wine (not to sweet or to dry) to the bottom of the pan. Rose Wine pairs well with shell fish and adds nice flavors and help steam shrimp. You can also use a Chardonnay.

15. Shrimp is done when they turn opague or in a “C” fetal position.

16. Pour cooked shrimp and juices over Jicama fruity salad and serve hot or cold. Toss together for a refreshing summer salad.

If you are a die hard fan of the Food Network then this post may make you a little jealous. Our dear friends Falon and Seth gave us the inside scoop that the Food Network would be in Arizona filming at Greasewood Flat. So, we took this as the perfect opportunity to not only try out Greasewood Flat’s famous Bacon Green Chili Cheeseburger but take part in an actual filming. Being an adventurous couple on a mission for good eats we seized the day, hopped in our car and headed up to Greasewood Flat. We could not contain our excitement and was eager to see what Food Network star and show was going to be making a special appearance. We have been told that Greasewood Flat has been a favorite local bar dive amongst the natives for years and we wanted to see what all the fuss was about. But leave it to us to let our taste buds and our eyes to do the judging. So, hold on tight to your saddlebags we are taking you on a tasty ride!

Driving up Greasewood Flats dusty dirt road pass the donkey corral we new we were in for a treat complete. Don’t worry their is ample parking. When we arrived we felt like we were walking through the doors of a Old Western Saloon and got glimpse of what Arizona was like before the sprawl. We could picture happy and satisfied cowboys riding off into the Arizona sunset after having a casual meal and a cold brew (Yee Haw!). We rubbed shoulders with an eclectic blend of diners from cowboys, cowgals, the cosmopolitan type, locals, out-of-towners and macho bikers armed with ice cold beer all eagerly waiting. Housed in a 120+ year old stage bunkhouse (circa 1883) with rickety wood floors and low ceiling plastered with dollar bills autographed by happy patrons. Greasewood Flat is a friendly, relaxing, airy and casual t-shirt and jeans dining joint and cowboy bar located off the beaten path. Loaded with lots of western charm, a cowboy-ish atmosphere, foot tapping country music, rustic decor and outdoor dining for fresh air this will surely get you in the western spirit.

What we love about dining at Greasewood Flat is that it is the complete opposite of Scottsdale posh, complete with good food and a good time. You truly go back in time – old wagon wheels, broke down wagons, livestock, farming tools and ironworks are on display as if you are on the set for a Western movie (minus the gun slinging outlaws!). While we waited for our meal we strolled around the property, which was the original stagecoach stop at Reata Pass between Fort McDowell and Phoenix. They even have a horseshoe pit to pass the time. At night you can kick back underneath the stars and enjoy live music, warm bonfires and square dancing on the dance floor. If you are lucky you can witness stunning sunset views over the Pinnacle Peak mountaintops to the west. It was the perfect backdrop for a wonderful dining experience and provided the Food Network film crew with some inspiration.

Hot dogs, warm bowl of chili and burgers is how the west was won or at least that is our stomachs talking. Greasewood Flats menu will make you hunger for home on the range and satisfy your big beefy cow-boy appetite (only cowboy size portions here!). With burgers and beer being a mainstay on the menu, it has been serving up juicy grilled to order burgers for 30 years. Being veteran grill masters they must know their way around the grill. But the question remained…would it live up to its name? Well, we would have to taste and see. Upon arriving we decided to get in line to place our order at their counter. We attempted to use our investigating skills to find out what Food Network Show was coming, but not even the servers had any clue. It appeared that the reveal would be hush hush until the filming crew arrived.

While we salivated over the menu we were told by some of the Greasewood Flat regulars to order their signature 1/2 lb Green Chili Cheeseburger or their famous 1/2lb Bacon Green Chili Cheeseburger. Seeing that we were starving we decided to order them both to share. How could we resist a burger piled high with crispy bacon and layered with Green Chili’s! Their burger is made with 90% fresh lean ground beef and served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and potato chips. They do sell beer and alcoholic beverages at their cash only bar, but only take card for buying food.

After we placed our order we head back outside to stake our claim at one their shaded picnic tables under a rolling canopy of mesquite trees right next to a roaring toasty fire barrel (since it does get chili in Arizona). We decided to play a game of Guess What Food Network Star is coming to dinner. We envisioned Guy Fieri from Drivers, Dine In and Dives driving up in his ’67 Camaro or Bobby Flay vs. Greasewood Flat in a Chili Burger Saloon-style Throwdown. We waited on the edge of out benches in anticipation for our order and for the Food Network. Just as our friends arrived our order number was called over the loudspeaker. With ticket in hand ( as the sign states “”No ticket, no food”) we made our way over to the pick up window as the Food Network camera crew arrived on the scene. Everyone turned around and began to stare and whisper wondering what Food Network host and chef would trail behind.

Just as we were prepared to bite into our juicy mouthwatering burgers the Food Network crew came up to our table and asked if they could film us chowing down. So, as to not disappoint one of our favorite t.v. networks and the potential hungry viewers we happily obliged. Adam & I and our friend Falon were filmed biting into our delish burgers and giving a thumbs up for good eats. Why not live a little! For the sake of Food Network and making our 15 minutes of fame fun and memorable Falon and I let our hair down a bit and took a gigantic bite into our shared cheeseburger at the same time. Adam even got filmed inside placing a burger order at the counter. Being an honorary foodie sleuth he got the inside scoop from the crew that the filming was for a Alton Brown’s new Food Network show “America’s Best”. Unfortunately Alton Brown (host/chef of Good Eats & Feasting on Asphalt) was unable to grace us with his witty, quirky and humorous presence , but the experience was still worth the drive. This show is definitely worth tuning in for when it premieres and airs on the Food Network. Can’t wait!

So put on your leather chaps, biker gear, cowboy boots and hat (not required, but fun!) for a wild western extravaganza. But most importantly come with hungry bellies ready to dine at Greasewood Flat and enjoy some fresh air, mountain views and feasting under the stars. Take a look around and see what to expect when you visit Greasewood Flat. We are going to wait to give this a spork rating until we visit again, but all in all the food was great and the atmosphere was fun!

If you are looking to scratch a Mexican food itch then Verde, your Mexican meal ticket is one place we would recommend. Just take our satisfied bellies word for it! The food is fresh, the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is no frills, no-nonsense just good food fast. Verde proves that you don’t have to cross the Mexican border to enjoy authentic Mexican fare (no American influence here!).

This casual, hip, green, easy going, neighborhood and family friendly Mexican eatery is located in a renovated 1930′s building in downtown Phoenix, AZ (the mecca for some of the best dining). Upon arriving at the restaurant we were immediately hypnotized by the colorful edgy graffiti mural on the side of the building, no this was not the work of vandal’s. But a commissioned work of art, artfully crafted using spray paint and the building as the bare canvas. Local graffiti artist Dose was given permission to the paint the town, or in this case the side of the restaurant. How cool! With stomachs rumbling we managed to delay our lunch for a few minutes (that was stretching it!) to steal a photo opt of the mural before heading in side for a bite to eat.

Verde’s barebone, modern, raw, industrial, exposed brick, polished concrete floor, colorful and eco-conscious decor makes this a trendy hangout to get our dine on. What made this quite a relaxing and causal dining experience was the ability to order-at-the counter and find our own seat. The tasty aroma coming from the kitchen was intoxicating and got us very excited. We were kindly greeted by owners, chefs and restaurateurs Joseph Aguayo and Matt Avilla who went over the menu with us. They truly made us feel right at home making sure our dining experience was a warm, inviting and memorable one.

The phrase “keep it simple stupid” rings true at Verde, with a menu pared down and back to the basics. Their straightforward, uncomplicated, simple and inexpensive menu was filled with some chef signature dishes that anyone would enjoy. They recommended we try their generous plate of famous rotisserie Oregano Lime Chicken and braised Green Chili Pork, which we hungrily agreed to share. Both dishes were served with Mexican staples of rice, beans, house salsa and homemade warm flour tortillas.

Our 1/2 chicken slow roasted to perfection was so flavorful (perfect balance of seasonings), savory, juicy and tender that it fell off the bone. They have a top of the line rotisserie for just this special occasion. Pssst…we heard they will be selling their whole rotisseries to go soon, Sam’s Club will have some competition. While the Mexican style shredded braised pork was fork tender with a hint of spice from the green chili’s. The pork melted in our mouth and made our palettes very happy. Just from the look and taste of it you can tell a lot of love and patience went into braising the pork. If you love Carnitas then you will love this dish!

We then proceeded to build our own taco’s with homemade salsa verde (Mexican green salsa made with roasted tomatillos, chile peppers, lime juice, cilantro, and onion) and sop up the meat juices with the stack of warm, fresh tortillas provided. Tacolicious! We tasted the soul of Mexico in every delicious bite. The meal was not complete without sipping down a refreshing ice cold glass of lemonade or as they say in Spanish “limonado”. Next time we will make sure to order a large helping of some of their fresh guacamole and corn tortilla chips to round out the meal. With a menu this good, Verde is sure to be a dining favorite among the hungry downtown crowd.

What makes this standout hip Mexican joint a spork up above the rest is that they use organic and locally sourced ingredients. Whenever possible they make everything in house including their yummy flour tortillas rolled out by hand. While we waited for our order we took a peek inside their enclosed made to order tortilla prep room complete with a large wood-burning comal (metal flat top) using Arizona sourced pecan wood. Both interior patrons and street side pedestrians can watch tortilla’s being freshly made right before our eyes through a glass window, reminiscent of watching a machine roll Krispy Kreme doughnuts on a conveyor belt. We noticed a few passerbyers on the street stop, drool and stare hungry eyed as the tortillas beckoned them to come on in and eat (some could not resist). If the delicious aroma does not entice your taste buds then the view will.

We are all about eating local and supporting local restaurants doing good. One of the biggest things we can do to support and encourage responsibly raised food & sustainability is to vote with our wallet. Now you can eat well at a restaurant where “sustainable,” “local” and “organic” are mainstays and pig out to your earth-loving heart’s content. What we love about Verde is that they are firm believers in “waste not, want not” and only make a certain amount of food each day. The good news is they do not waste but the bad news is that once a dish is sold out, its sold out. So, we recommend getting there early to beat the breakfast, lunch and dinner crowd.

Not only is Verde all about eating green, but it is all about living green. Which is way it is no surprise that Verde means “green” in Spanish, they are truly living up to their name by setting a standard for other aspiring earth-friendly restaurants. They are looking beyond the menu for ways to ease their impact on the planet. While we waited for orders we toured the restaurant and admired their creative decoupage wallpaper made from recycled Arizona Republic Food & Drink newspaper clippings. This was a playful eco way to pay homage to Arizona’s love of food and the owners passion as well.

Green design is a huge part of what makes Verde a dining must, they use low maintenance, durable, locally reclaimed, sustainable materials and finishes. They are even going the extra eco mile by cooking with energy efficient appliances, recycling and dishing out on biodegradable plates & utensils to reduce landfill waste. Not to mention taking a cue from the buildings raw charm instead of building from scratch. We took a seat at one of their recycled wood tables as our food was paraded to us in a procession alongside other diners dishes. You couldn’t help but drool!

We will definitely be adding Verde to our dining roster and will need to stop in for breakfast soon, so should you! Hey, we are all about sharing Arizona’s best kept secrets and hidden hole in the walls. So don’t be stingy bring some of your family and friends to dine at this eco-hip eatery. We guarantee you will have no complainers at the table just smiling bellies yearning for “seconds please!”

After a long day at the Old Town Farmer’s Market last Saturday we were in the mood for a relaxing, laid back and delicious lunch. So, we sought a dining suggestion from a local, avid, neighborhood foodie who did not steer us in the wrong direction. A gem located in the heart of downtown Scottsdale, Arcadia Farms Cafe & Wine Bar is a house turned country cottage eatery and contains intimate indoor dining and outdoor patio seating. This chic restaurant is a popular breakfast and lunch spot for locals and offers divine upscale dining at affordable prices. Beloved for its quaint, casual, elegant, inviting cottage and garden atmosphere this restaurant has solidified a special place in our hearts. Ladies you may be tempted to break out your casual floral dresses and festive hats. If you have never dined at Arcadia Farms Cafe & Wine Bar please accept this blog post as a personal invitation.

When we arrived we immediately felt a sense of serenity and calm. As smiling and talkative couples, families, friends and ladies who lunch chatted over a cup of tea, glass of wine, their famous Strawberry Chicken salad (grilled chicken, vine-ripened strawberries, toasted almonds, mixed baby greens and poppyseed vinaigrette) and scrumptious scones on the front patio. From where we were standing we can see why Arcadia Farms Cafe was touted as the quintessential dine spot for ladies who love to eat (we second that notion). This is definitely a lovely place to come with girlfriends to catch up on life or get reacquainted. But boys don’t be shy this restaurant is no longer just for the ladies who lunch crowd.

Ample seating, garden chairs, vibrant floral baskets add to the cottage charm and makes you feel right at home and at ease. Upon entering the restaurant our eyes were immediately enticed by the delectable indulgent pastries on display which transported us to a Parisian pastry shop in the French country side. Don’t forget to save room for dessert! A plethora of desserts and savories including coffee cakes, cookies, brownies, croissants, cakes, pies, muffins, bear claws, sticky buns, scones are kind enough to grace the menu. Baked daily in their on-site bakery to ensure freshness and flavor.

As you enter the restaurant contemporary elegance is beautifully anchored by flowers, trees, linens, French country decor, planters and stone garden statues which set the stage for the culinary delights to come. The restaurant seduces you with an appetizing and innovative comfort food menu, approachable wines and cozy shabby-chic décor. Not stuffy, not boring, justcas playful and chic! Its country-cottage interior is charming, eclectic, with simple floral arrangements perched on linen-covered tables and comfy garden chairs enhances the intimate culinary experience.

All you Arizonians would agree that there’s nothing better than dining al fresco. We did not want to waste such a beautiful Arizona afternoon dining indoors. So we decided to dine out on their preferred serene garden patio to enjoy the Arizona sunshine and fresh air. The back patio provided a warm, cozy, charming garden setting with relaxed yet elegant ambiance that felt like a transplanted French courtyard.

As we were escorted to our table we witnessed many private birthday celebrations, showers, and other special events harmoniously and effortlessly come alive before our eyes in their own intimate dining alcoves. If you are looking to host any special event or gathering large or small then you’ve come to the right place. You can entertain your guest in one of their themed private dining spaces. Celebrate with family and friends in their Bungalow, Cottage, Wine Room or Hacienda dining venue. The un-intimidating menu and sweetly intimate atmosphere makes Arcadia Farms Cafe perfect for any special occasion, most notably baby showers and ladies brunch meet ups. I have already decided that this would be the perfect place for me to host my future baby shower, sorry mom no news yet!

Our table was elegantly dressed in white linens and stationed underneath a shaded canopy as beautiful trees hovered and provided extra shade and intimacy. Birds chirping in the background, swooping and flying overhead watching for falling crumbs just added to the whimsical garden ambiance. Not to mention it provided entertainment as we waited for our meals. The server was kind, attentive and pleasant and brought us out a complimentary bread basket sourced from local artisans. With hungry little birds perched over our shoulders we indulged them with a few bread crumbs.

Aside from the splendid atmosphere, Arcadia Farms Cafe is know for its array of contemporary American cuisine which made us leap with anticipation for the meal to come. Now on to the hard part deciding what to order! The delicious and impressive menu includes Arcadia Farms Cafe classic specialty dishes, appetizers, fresh salads, hearty gourmet sandwiches and handmade desserts. Everything on their menu is made with local, organic, pesticide and hormone free ingredients.

The food was just as amazing as the atmosphere. For an appetizer we tried their trio of bruschetta — smoked salmon, tomato-basil and mozzarella; and prosciutto, arugula and goat cheese.

Adam tried their Arcadia Farms Cafe signature classic chicken, wild mushroom and leek crepes made with roasted chicken, wild mushrooms, sauteed leeks, goat cheese, basil cream sauce, basil oil drizzle and herb salad. The crepe was so savory and sinfully delicious that we wished for seconds to magically appear on the plate. What really made this a stand out dish was the basil cream sauce which made our taste buds scream “Wow!” tempted us to lick the plate clean. Don’t worry we practiced some restraint by showing good table manners, enlisting the help of our spoons to do our dirty work!

While I had the pleasure of dining on one of their famous gourmet sandwiches the herb roasted chicken. Made with slow-roasted chicken, oven-cured tomatoes, roasted artichokes, baby spinach and herb goat cheese spread on a warm crispy baguette. As a side dish I ordered a bowl of their featured soup de jour an amazing, lovely pureed, creamy and smooth butter nut squash.

As die hard sushi aficionados we are always in search of amazing sushi restaurants on our travels and in our local area. In Arizona there is definitely a fair share of sushi bars to choose from, however – quality, fresh sushi that tastes like it just swam in from the shores can be hard to find. So, you can imagine our excitement when the ladies at Sweet Republic recommended we try Hana Japanese Eatery (they didn’t have to twist our arm or bribe us with a scoop).

Hana Japanese Eatery is a family owned restaurant that serves authentic and traditional Japanese cuisine and sushi. There aren’t gimmicky rolls or hibachi tables, just the freshest sushi, sashimi and Japanese cuisine you will ever eat. Hana surely did not disappoint and delivered on service, the yum factor and a comfortable atmosphere that left us craving more. Trust us – once you acquire the taste for high-grade sushi, it’s hard to go back to eating the mediocre stuff served up at countless sushi bars across the city.

Hana (meaning flower) Japanese Eatery is known for its super fresh sushi and Japanese cuisine. This family-owned restaurant has won praise for its fresh ingredients, consistently great food and friendly atmosphere. Upon walking in the restaurant we were greeted with a warm welcome as though we were family – long lost relatives just reunited. It’s a place where an exotic menu meets a “feels-like-family” vibe. Hana Japanese Eatery is a little oasis from life’s stresses. When you walk in the door you immediately feel at ease – welcomed by the staff and smiling sushi chefs behind the bar. The simple elegance of this tiny sushi bar transports you to another world.

A class-act sushi bar, Hana Japanese Eatery is charming and welcoming spot for a casual, out of this world Japanese feast. We decided to take a seat at their substantial sushi bar with more than a dozen stools to get a front row view of two sushi masters – brother and sister team: Chef Koji and Lori Hashimoto. Their dish presentations is picture perfect and worth tweeting about! When it comes to sushi, a good show goes a long way toward the ultimate enjoyment. Even the huge, playful, wooden sushi boat-shaped trays overflowing with a mouthwatering bounty of sushi, sashimi, wasabi, and ginger added to the restaurants flair. Each sushi boat drifting over a sea of smiling restaurant faces was adorned with a flaming sugar cube, impressive enough to ignite appreciative oohs and ahs from the crowds. Definitely worth a photo opt from Hana’s adoring sushi patrons carrying their smart phones. It only took a few moments for the flame to be extinguished by the ravenous recipient lucky enough to devour it.

Hana Japanese Eatery guarantees the highest quality and freshest fish delivered. Sushi chefs prepare your meal right before your eyes, heightening the visual feast with spirited banter. The extensive menu offers a wide range of sushi in various styles . However, if your taste buds do not run to sushi, there are pleasing options such as soup, salad, USDA steak and a fine selection of noodle dishes. While they supply your bellies with the best sushi and sashimi in the Valley they leave the alcohol to you. They have a BYOB policy where they encourage you to purchase sake, ice cold brew or bottle of wine prior to dining at the restaurant if you so desire.

At Hana’s you will find authentic Japanese cuisine from real Japanese chefs with years of experience in creating dishes that will make your mouth sing with joy. The freshest fish (you think it was virtually alive and squirming when it came in) flown in daily begging to be eaten, the freshest vegetables, and keen eye for detail makes their food worth savoring again and again! Like bite size pieces of edible art each sushi dish arrived so artfully and meticulously prepared. It even took us a few minutes to dig in because we wanted to relish the enticing views on our plates (the best seats in the house).

While we admired the menu and pondered what to order we were given complimentary fresh poki chips (cucumber/crab salad atop fried crispy wonton triangles) from the sushi chef as a starter just to say “Welcome!”. Light, refreshing and tasty the poki chips, which took us a few seconds to gobble up, immediately drew us in and got our attention. This appetizer truly set the tone for the evening, what was bound to be a most unforgettable meal and dining experience filled with the unexpected. On the menu we saw some of our favorite classic sushi rolls such as eel and spicy tuna which we eagerly ordered.

We had the pleasure of speaking with some hardcore Hana lovers (aka Hanacore) and they were even kind to let us sample their hamachi kama (the collar, between the gills and the neck of the young yellowtail tuna fish) which was so flaky, tender, juicy and delicious. The grilled yellowtail collar was served piping hot, with a crusty outer layer that encased the flaky fish neck. It’s a large piece of fish, definitely enough for two and flawlessly prepared.

Be sure to ask the staff or chefs for recommendations – they are very helpful and offer great suggestions. We ordered a few of their chefs specials (dictated by what is fresh that day) and signature dishes as recommended by the sushi chefs. On our first visit the showstopper was their prized Toro – the fatty belly portion of the tuna. Although one of the most expensive parts of the tuna, it is definitely the most delicious. Toro is beautifully pink, buttery and melts the minute it hits your tongue. While this dish will certainly set you back a couple of dollars, its decadence and deliciousness make it a worthy choice and worth every penny. The other highlight was their REAL pickled wasabi! It was amazing and served as a wonderful addition to the meal. Once you try it you will never want paste wasabi again.

We were indeed satisfied when we inhaled their signature Volcano roll, a California roll draped in white fish topped with a oozing warm spicy mayo sauce baked to perfection. This sushi roll is sure to warm your soul and your belly. Talk about yum! This roll was erupting with amazing flavors that set off fireworks in our mouth. Definitely worthy of an encore!

During our second visit to Hana Japanese Eatery we enjoyed the uber fresh rainbow carpaccio and by Hana’s approval we were not afraid to lick the plate clean. Thin slices of Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, and Ocean Sea Bass are accompanied by a cucumber lemon relish, and garnished with light oil and small bits of lemon.

Toward the very end of our euphoric sushi feast our bellies stopped growling for attention…or so we thought! When we were sure our stomachs couldn’t fit anymore, our server persuaded us to order the real Wasabi Vanilla ice cream made by Sweet Republic which was then topped with Hana’s famous pickled wasabi (no cherry on top here!) . The taste of real pickled wasabi topped on real vanilla and wasabi ice cream is out of this world! A little hint of heat, mixed with the creaminess of the ice cream truly elated our taste buds! Take our word for it – you will thank us later.

On with the pictures! Below are some of the other amazing dishes we enjoyed.

Spicy Tuna – Tuna seasoned with Asian hot sauce

Do you have a love affair with your iPhone? As self confessed iPhone addicts we take our phone everywhere and use it for everything imaginable, a gazillion things to be exact. Our iPhone serves as an alarm clock, calender, address book while allowing us to stay connected with friends and surf the web (and our favorite food sites). Not to shabby!

Whether you are a foodie, amazing cook or amateur chef, we all can’t resist delicious mobile apps that make cooking, finding restaurants and ingredients much easier. With such an array of iPhone apps that cater to our love of food we can now browse menus, read restaurant reviews (the good and bad), use the gps to find a nearby eatery or trendy hot spot, make reservations, check in, calculate tips and find a plethora of scrumptious recipes. Grocery shopping, recipe hunting and discovering new restaurants has never been so effortless. We have all seen the commercials of Apple touting “there’s an app for that” , well we would have to agree. If you don’t have an iPhone yet this is surely gonna make you wish you had one.

With our interests peaked we decided to surf the interwebs to dig deeper into this tasty food tattoo trend. It didn’t take long to find a plethora of food blogs chronicling the ink’d food trend. You can read them here, here, here, here and here.

Rather you like savory or sweet there seems to be a food ‘tat for you! So what is your flavor? – A Chicago dog, grapefruit or sweet cherry pie. The detail is amazing – some serious time and talent when into these.
